2-Hour Workshop: Difficult Conversations at Work

2 Hours Online or In-Person Delivered by Christina James, RMN

A practical 2-hour workshop for managers, HR and leaders — giving you a clear 3-step framework and the communication skills to handle performance, behaviour and wellbeing conversations with confidence and calm.

Enquire About This Course

Difficult conversations are one of the most challenging aspects of workplace communication. When handled poorly, they can lead to conflict, disengagement, and escalation. When handled well, they build trust, clarity, and improved performance.

This 2-hour interactive workshop gives managers, HR professionals, and leaders practical tools to approach difficult conversations with confidence, structure, and calm. The focus is on real workplace communication skills that can be applied immediately.

Why This Workshop Matters

Many workplace issues are not caused by the conversation itself, but by:

  • Avoiding the conversation for too long
  • Unclear or judgemental language
  • Assumptions instead of clarity
  • Emotional escalation
  • Lack of structure or confidence

This workshop helps participants replace uncertainty and avoidance with simple, effective communication strategies.

What the Workshop Covers

Participants will explore:

  • What makes workplace conversations “difficult”
  • How to approach performance, behaviour, and wellbeing conversations
  • A simple structure for managing difficult conversations
  • How language can escalate or reduce tension
  • How to separate behaviour from judgement
  • How to stay calm and clear under pressure
  • The importance of active listening in reducing conflict

Practical Framework

Participants will learn a simple 3-step approach:

  1. Describe what has been observed (without judgement)
  2. Clarify by asking open and neutral questions
  3. Agree next steps and actions collaboratively

Workshop Style

This is a highly interactive 2-hour session including:

  • Real workplace scenarios and examples
  • Practical communication exercises
  • Role-play and language reframing activities
  • Guided reflection and discussion
  • Active listening practice in pairs

The session is designed to be accessible, supportive, and suitable for all levels of management experience.

Outcomes for Organisations

Following this workshop, organisations can expect:

  • Improved confidence in managing difficult conversations
  • Reduced workplace conflict and escalation
  • Clearer and more consistent communication
  • Stronger relationships between managers and staff
  • Improved performance management discussions
  • Increased psychological safety and trust

Ideal For

  • Senior leaders and executives
  • HR and People teams
  • Line managers and supervisors
  • NHS and healthcare organisations
  • Corporate organisations and team leaders

I recently completed a three-day training course with Christina James at Sanitas Hub to become a Mental Health First Aid practitioner and Neurodiversity Champion, and I cannot recommend the experience highly enough. Christina delivered the training with exceptional professionalism while maintaining a warm, approachable, and supportive atmosphere throughout.

I attended the 2 day Mental Health First Aider training with Christina at Sanitas Hub. The delivery of the course was exceptional and she really brought the subject to life. Despite it being taught virtually for the 2 days, I was completely engaged and despite some tough subjects, I thoroughly enjoyed the course and would have no hesitation in recommending anyone to join this course.

I have just completed the MHFA course with Sanitas Hub, provided by Christina James and it was brilliant. She was an amazing instructor, gave lots of real life experiences and brought a positive energy to a difficult subject. Christina was understanding, and provided lots of extra information you cannot find online or in books. I would highly recommend her courses to others.

Christina James is an excellent instructor. After the MHFA course I feel more confident in helping others successfully and most importantly ensuring my own mental health is ok in the process. When it comes to any other related courses or refreshers I would definitely seek her as a tutor!

Highly recommend this course with Christina, she is a fountain of knowledge when it comes to mental health. A very informative & interactive two day training session. Care is taken when heavy subjects are undertaken to make sure everyone takes sufficient breaks & is doing ok. I thoroughly enjoyed it & feel like I have the skills required to go forward as an MHFA.

The course has been lovely, it was very useful to learn the material in the context of Christina's real world lived experience with some of the conditions mentioned on the course, and invaluable to find out best practice tips when approaching such cases. The format was brilliant and interaction in the group was very helpful.
