Staying Hydrated Through the Heat

It’s a scorcher out there. As the UK sits under another hotspell, it’s the perfect moment for a gentle reminder about something we all know matters — but that’s surprisingly easy to forget in the day-to-day: drinking enough water.

Why Hydration Matters (For Every Brain)

Water isn’t just about quenching thirst. It affects our concentration, mood, energy levels, and even our ability to regulate emotions. Mild dehydration has been linked to fatigue, headaches, poor focus, and irritability — the very things that can make an already demanding day feel harder.

For neurotypical brains, dehydration can quietly chip away at concentration and decision-making without you even noticing the cause.

For neurodivergent brains — particularly those with ADHD — hydration can matter even more. Interoception (the ability to notice internal body signals like thirst) can work differently, meaning the “I’m thirsty” signal doesn’t always land until you’re already dehydrated. Add hyperfocus into the mix, and it’s easy to sit for hours without a single sip of water. Sensory sensitivities can also make certain drinking experiences (temperature, texture, taste) feel off-putting, which adds another layer to an already tricky habit to build.

The upshot: hydration isn’t one-size-fits-all, and if you’ve struggled to keep it up, it’s not a willpower issue — it’s a brain-and-body one.

Gentle Reminders That Actually Work

If “just remember to drink water” has never worked for you, you’re not alone. Try pairing hydration with something that already has its own cue:

  • Habit-stack it — drink a glass of water every time you boil the kettle, sit down at your desk, or switch tasks
  • Visual cues — keep a bottle in your eyeline, not in a bag or cupboard
  • Marked bottles — the ones with hourly time markers can turn hydration into a visible, low-effort goal
  • Phone or smartwatch reminders — a simple hourly buzz can bridge the gap when internal signals are quiet
  • Pair it with routine — water before your morning coffee, water with medication, water before a meeting

Small, repeatable cues tend to work far better than good intentions alone.

If Water Just Isn’t Your Thing

Plain water doesn’t appeal to everyone, and that’s completely fine — the goal is fluid intake, not a specific drink. Good alternatives include:

  • Herbal or fruit teas (hot or cold-brewed over ice)
  • Sparkling water — the fizz can make it feel more like a treat
  • Water with fruit, cucumber, or mint for a flavour boost without the sugar
  • Milk or milk alternatives, which also hydrate and offer nutrients
  • Water-rich foods — cucumber, watermelon, oranges, and soups all count toward your daily intake
  • Squash or diluted juice, if it helps you actually drink more overall

The best hydration strategy is the one you’ll actually stick to.

I recently completed a three-day training course with Christina James at Sanitas Hub to become a Mental Health First Aid practitioner and Neurodiversity Champion, and I cannot recommend the experience highly enough. Christina delivered the training with exceptional professionalism while maintaining a warm, approachable, and supportive atmosphere throughout.

I attended the 2 day Mental Health First Aider training with Christina at Sanitas Hub. The delivery of the course was exceptional and she really brought the subject to life. Despite it being taught virtually for the 2 days, I was completely engaged and despite some tough subjects, I thoroughly enjoyed the course and would have no hesitation in recommending anyone to join this course.

I have just completed the MHFA course with Sanitas Hub, provided by Christina James and it was brilliant. She was an amazing instructor, gave lots of real life experiences and brought a positive energy to a difficult subject. Christina was understanding, and provided lots of extra information you cannot find online or in books. I would highly recommend her courses to others.

Christina James is an excellent instructor. After the MHFA course I feel more confident in helping others successfully and most importantly ensuring my own mental health is ok in the process. When it comes to any other related courses or refreshers I would definitely seek her as a tutor!

Highly recommend this course with Christina, she is a fountain of knowledge when it comes to mental health. A very informative & interactive two day training session. Care is taken when heavy subjects are undertaken to make sure everyone takes sufficient breaks & is doing ok. I thoroughly enjoyed it & feel like I have the skills required to go forward as an MHFA.

The course has been lovely, it was very useful to learn the material in the context of Christina's real world lived experience with some of the conditions mentioned on the course, and invaluable to find out best practice tips when approaching such cases. The format was brilliant and interaction in the group was very helpful.
